The Domaine Saint Luc was created in 1971 and is situated in Drome, in the Provence region. This area is famous, amongst other things, for its truffles and lavender. When establishing The Domaine, the founder placed great importance on the choice of soils and type of grape, mainly syrah.
To avoid growing our vines on too many different soil types, our vineyard is spread over a number of small and selected sections of the Tricastin Hills and Cotes du Rhone. Similarly, in order to control the production and ensure the continued quality of our wines, we have kept the size of the vineyard to about 30 hectares. The soils are, in the main, argilo-calcaires, with a strong presence of rolled pebbles deposited over the many years from the River Rhone. The Cotes du Rhone soil is rich in decalcified red clay that maintains heat. These soils produce a warm and spicy wine. On the Tricastin Hills, the soil is less heavy, and is mixed with a little sand,
hich gives the wine here a lightness and freshness to the matured fruit.
The grape growth goes through a somewhat short phase; there is a harsh de-budding in May, followed by a thinning of the young grapes in July. Tasting and analysis determine when the grapes are ready to be harvested - usually in September. It is then that the individual taste and personality of the soils can be fully recognised.
